The Earth as an independent entity holds various inherent capabilities that together, contribute to self-sufficiency and self-sustainability. Millions of years preceding the dawn of mankind attest to this phenomenon. Where life once flourished, death soon followed. With inevitable decimation later came definitive restoration. For some time, this complex cycle of progression had remained undeterred, that is, until humanity's introduction to the world. Today, societies have contributed greatly to the gradual decline of Earth's once prevailing mechanisms for sustainability. Without concern for change, society places Earth on a path toward insurmountable travesty. An interesting article reminds us of the importance for future decision-makers to be made aware of environmental conditions--a greater emphasis placed on marine environments. Taiwanese university students were assessed for their awareness, understanding, and attitudes toward marine and coastal issues through the use of a questionnaire survey form of analysis. It was concluded that a noticeable gap exists between widespread environmental concerns and low engagement in environmental actions. The task of environmental sustainability does not fall on the shoulders of the Taiwanese alone. More than 70% of Earth is comprised of ocean. A worldwide increase in awareness accounts for better results.
As individuals gain awareness through experience in marine-related activities and overall marine knowledge, new methods for environmental behavior can be implemented to promote and ensure restored sustainability. A world-wide, collective agreement to outlined terms would allow for such a movement to be enforced and practiced faithfully. In time, the damages elicited upon Earth would be paid for.
